Kirsten Hansen, M.P.P.

Kirsten manages the development of trainings and other resources offered by the Center for Tobacco Cessation. She has worked in tobacco cessation since 2003, having previously served as Outreach Coordinator for the California Smokers' Helpline and Executive Director of the California Tobacco Control Alliance, an organization which advocates for increased access to tobacco cessation treatments. 

Kirsten received her Master's in Public Policy from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, and two B.A.s in Drama and Comparative Culture from UC Irvine.

Kristin Harms, B.A.

Communications Manager

Kristin manages the communications and outreach efforts of both the the Center for Tobacco Cessation and the California Smokers' Helpline.

She has more than 20 years of experience in health care marketing and communications and 12 years of experience in tobacco control, including previous positions as Policy Manager and Freedom From Smoking Director for the American Lung Association of San Diego.

Kristin earned her B.A. in Social Ecology from UC Irvine and a diploma in Graphic Design from Platt College in San Diego.

Gary J. Tedeschi, Ph.D.

Gary has been Clinical Director of the California Smokers' Helpline since 1994. A licensed psychologist, Gary is responsible for clinical supervision, counseling protocol development, counselor training, and continuing education.  He also serves as teaching faculty for the Center for Tobacco Cessation, focusing on the elements of effective behavioral interventions to help smokers quit.

Gary holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri, a M.A. in counseling psychology from Boston College, and a B.A. in psychology from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

Sharon Cummins, Ph.D.

Sharon joined the California Smokers' Helpline in 1996 as a postdoctoral fellow. She currently serves as Director of Research and Evaluation for the Helpline and teaching faculty for the Center for Tobacco Cessation. She has played a key role in identifying research needs in the area of tobacco cessation, designing intervention studies, and evaluating program impact. She has been active in national efforts to standardize data reporting with respect to tobacco cessation.

Sharon holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (now Alliant University) and a B.S. in Biology from San Diego State University.

Christopher Anderson, B.A.

Chris has over 15 years of experience in tobacco cessation, including counseling, protocol development, study design, program administration, and evaluation. He currently serves as Program Director for both the California Smokers' Helpline and the Center for Tobacco Cessation. He consults widely with state and national organizations on the implementation of cessation programs and served as lead writer for the CDC's Telephone Quitlines: A Resource for Development, Implementation and Evaluation.

Chris received his B.A. in Literature from the University of Dallas.

Shu-Hong Zhu, Ph.D.

Shu-Hong is a Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at UC San Diego and serves as Principal Investigator for the California Smokers’ Helpline and the Center for Tobacco Cessation. His research focuses on smoking behavior and on interventions for tobacco cessation. He is best known for his work demonstrating the effectiveness of quitlines, now widely adopted internationally. He consults widely with national and international health and governmental agencies such as the World Health Organization and World Bank.

Shu-Hong holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from UC San Diego, a M.S. in Psychology from Beijing University, and a B.S. in Psychology from Hangzhou University.
